Finding Edna Lewis

Journey with Deb Freeman to discover the soul of Southern cooking.

Field Studio and executive producer Deb Freeman present a new series for the web and TV with monthly episodes beginning July 2024 and a feature-length premiere set for February 2025.

From Freetown, Virginia, to New York City, Edna Lewis carved a remarkable path. She introduced many Americans to seasonal cooking, Southern cooking — the cooking of the Black community in rural Virginia that raised her. Yet despite a life that included fame and acclaim, she is not a household name.

Discover Miss Lewis with Deb, one dish at a time.

Food storyteller Deb Freeman ↗ has made her mark through an award-winning podcast, Setting the Table, and in-print across an array of high-profile publications—Eater, Condé Nast Traveler, Food52, the list goes on. Locals in Richmond, Virginia, know her as the food editor of Style Weekly. And she was recently honored by Black Women in Food, Slow Food USA, and named by Axios one of the “most powerful Richmonders.” Deb writes and talks about the intersection of race, culture, and food. As executive producer and host, that’s where she will find Edna Lewis.
